Flying private in Dallas

Dallas has three good general aviation airports and one of the deeper charter markets in the country. Here is what a pilot who works it would tell you before you book: which field for which neighborhood, which weeks fill, and what fits the trip.

Airports

The airports, and when each one wins.

DAL · Dallas Love Field

When it wins

The close in airport. It wins for Highland Park, University Park, Preston Hollow and downtown, for a heavy jet, and for an international return. Runways run over 7,500 feet and customs is on the field. Airline traffic shares the runways, so it costs a few minutes of taxi and sequencing at busy hours.

FBO: Several FBOs on both sides of the field, each with a lounge, a ramp car and hangar space. Ask which side the aircraft is on before you drive: the east and west FBOs are a few minutes apart by road.

Ground travel: Highland Park about 10 minutes. Preston Hollow about 10 to 15 minutes. Downtown about 15 minutes. Plano about 25 to 35 minutes. Frisco about 35 minutes. Southlake about 35 to 45 minutes.

Any drive times are approximate; traffic and FBO location affect the journey.

ADS · Addison

When it wins

North Dallas. It wins for Preston Hollow, Plano, Frisco and the Tollway corridor, and for anyone who wants a corporate field with no airline traffic. The single runway is about 7,200 feet and customs is on the field. On a weekday evening it stays busy with corporate departures.

FBO: Several FBOs around the field. Lounges, ramp cars, and a lot of based aircraft, which means a good chance the aircraft you want is already on the field.

Ground travel: Preston Hollow about 15 minutes. Plano about 15 minutes. Frisco about 20 minutes. Highland Park about 20 minutes. Southlake about 35 minutes. Downtown about 20 to 25 minutes.

Any drive times are approximate; traffic and FBO location affect the journey.

FTW · Fort Worth Meacham

When it wins

The Fort Worth side. It wins for Southlake, Westlake, Colleyville and downtown Fort Worth, and for a quieter departure than Love Field. Two parallel runways, the longer one about 7,500 feet, and customs on the field.

FBO: Several FBOs with lounges and ramp cars, and a slower pace than the Dallas fields. Hangar space is available for an overnight, which matters in hail season.

Ground travel: Downtown Fort Worth about 10 minutes. Westlake about 20 minutes. Southlake about 25 minutes. Highland Park about 45 minutes.

The season

When Dallas is busy, and what it does to price.

Dallas flies year round, and the pattern follows the calendar more than the weather. The peak weeks are Christmas through New Year's Day and Presidents Day weekend for the ski markets, the spring break weeks in March for the mountains and the beach, Thanksgiving week, the Texas OU weekend in October, Memorial Day weekend and the week of July 4. In those weeks the aircraft based here are spoken for early, Aspen slots and parking fill first, and prices sit in the upper half of the range. Late spring and early fall are the easier weeks to find aircraft and the lower half of the range.

Aircraft

What fits the runway and the mission.

All three fields have runways over 7,000 feet, so in Dallas the aircraft is set by the mission, not the airport. Nashville and the Gulf coast are light jet legs of about an hour and a half. Scottsdale and Las Vegas fit a light or midsize jet at about two to two and a half hours. Aspen wants a midsize or super midsize jet with the climb performance for a mountain airport, more so in winter. Cabo needs the range for about two hours over water and desert plus the customs paperwork, so it is midsize and up. New York at about three hours is midsize to heavy jet work. Summer heat matters here: a full cabin and full fuel on a 100 degree afternoon can mean a fuel stop or a larger aircraft, and we tell you which before you book.

Local notes

Details to plan before you fly.

  • Love Field is ten minutes from Highland Park. For Park Cities clients it is the airport even when Addison has the aircraft; the positioning hop is short.
  • Addison sits under the DFW airspace, so departures get routed around the airline traffic. On a Friday evening allow a few extra minutes on the ground.
  • Spring storm season runs March through May. Afternoon lines of thunderstorms cross the metroplex; a morning departure usually beats them, and hangar space matters when hail is in the forecast.
  • A 100 degree August afternoon cuts takeoff performance. For Aspen or Cabo with a full cabin we sometimes plan a fuel stop or a larger aircraft. We say so in the quote.
  • Aspen in winter: many operators do not land there after dark, and the weather alternate is Rifle or Eagle. We tell you the plan before you book so a diversion is a plan, not a surprise.
  • Cabo: passports, the Mexican arrival filing and the customs stop are handled by the operator ahead of time. The return clears US customs at Love Field or Addison, both of which have customs on the field.
  • Texas OU weekend in October fills the Dallas ramps with inbound aircraft. Book the Sunday departure early; that is the slot that sells out.

Our standards

Every airplane has to fit the trip.

  • We review the airplane, its condition, the pilots’ experience and the requirements of your trip.
  • Our starting preference is an airframe from 2005 or newer. An exception comes with an explanation.
  • Your written quote identifies the airplane, what the price includes and the terms that could change it.
Fair questions

Flying private in Dallas questions.

Which Dallas airport should I use?

Love Field for the Park Cities, Preston Hollow, downtown and any heavy jet. Addison for north Dallas, Plano and Frisco. Meacham for Southlake, Westlake and Fort Worth. Tell us where you are starting from and we pick the field with you, and we say when the aircraft you want is already based on one of them.

How far ahead should I book from Dallas?

Three to five days for a normal week. Two to four weeks for Aspen between Christmas and Presidents Day, spring break, the Texas OU weekend, Thanksgiving and Christmas week. Give Cabo a week when you can so the passports and the Mexican paperwork are done before the day.

Can you arrange a flight from Dallas to Mexico?

Yes. Cabo San Lucas is one of the routes we quote often from Dallas. The operator files the Mexican arrival paperwork and plans the customs stop, you bring passports, and the return clears US customs at Love Field or Addison. We walk you through what the trip needs before you book.

How much does it cost to fly private from Dallas?

Your emailed planning estimate shows the current range by aircraft category once you enter a destination and dates. Nashville and the Gulf coast sit at the lower end on a light jet. Aspen in winter, Cabo and New York sit higher because the trip calls for a larger aircraft. Your quote will be exact.
