ADS · Addison
Addison is the north Dallas option, close to Preston Hollow, Plano and Frisco. Its runway is about 7,200 feet, which suits light, midsize and super midsize jets. When you live north of the LBJ Freeway, Addison usually wins on drive time.
FTW · Fort Worth Meacham
Meacham is on the north side of Fort Worth, about 10 to 15 minutes from downtown Fort Worth and a shorter drive than Love Field for Southlake and Westlake. Its main runway is about 7,500 feet.
ASE · Aspen Pitkin County Airport
Aspen Pitkin County Airport, called Sardy Field, is about three miles from downtown Aspen. The drive is about 10 minutes to town and about 15 to 20 minutes to Snowmass Village. The field sits at about 7,800 feet with one runway of about 8,000 feet. Arrivals land toward town and departures leave the other way because of the terrain. The airport closes to jets overnight, from 11 pm to 7 am.
EGE · Eagle County Regional
Eagle County Regional, near Vail, is the alternate when Aspen weather is down. It sits lower, has a longer runway and an easier approach. From Eagle it is about 70 miles and about an hour and a half by car to Aspen through Glenwood Springs.
RIL · Garfield County Regional
Rifle is the other alternate, about 65 miles and about an hour and 20 minutes by car from Aspen. It is lower and drier than Aspen, and its approach works in weather that closes Sardy Field. A car can be waiting there if the crew has to divert.

What a pilot would tell you about this leg.
Aspen has two seasons. Winter runs from late November to mid April, with the tightest weeks from Christmas through New Year, Presidents Day weekend and the March spring break. Summer runs from mid June through Labor Day, with the Food and Wine Classic in June, July 4 and the Music Festival through August. On peak weeks aircraft in Dallas book out early and ramp parking at Aspen fills, so some aircraft drop you and reposition, which shows on the quote. Book peak weeks two to four weeks ahead when you can.
- Aspen is a mountain airport with its own rules. The approach needs higher ceilings than a flat land airport, so snow and low cloud can hold arrivals for an hour or close the field for the afternoon.
- Eagle and Rifle are the plan B. On a marginal day the crew carries fuel to try Aspen once and then divert, and we set up a car at the alternate before you take off.
- In summer the thin air at 7,800 feet limits takeoff weight on a hot afternoon. The crew may plan a morning departure home, a lighter fuel load or a short fuel stop, and we tell you before you fly.
- Aspen limits the largest business jets by wingspan. None of the cabins on this page are affected.
- Keep coats in the cabin, not the baggage hold. The Aspen ramp is cold and the walk to the car is outside.
