When it wins

The airport for Buckhead, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs and the north side. It wins on drive time to where clients stay, it has customs on the field, and its main runway of about 6,000 feet handles light through many heavy jets. A weight limit keeps the largest long range jets out; those go to Hartsfield. It is a busy field, so a Friday afternoon can mean a few minutes waiting for release.

FBO: Several FBOs with lounges, ramp cars and hangar space, and a lot of traffic around you. Voluntary night noise rules apply, so a late arrival is planned rather than assumed. Customs on the field handles a Bahamas or Caribbean return.

Ground travel: Buckhead about 15 to 20 minutes. Sandy Springs about 15 minutes. Midtown about 20 to 25 minutes. Downtown about 25 to 35 minutes.

FTY · Fulton County

When it wins

The west side. It wins for downtown, Midtown, the stadium and anything west of the connector, where it is often faster by car than PDK, and it wins as the calmer field when PDK is jammed. Its runway is about 5,800 feet, so light and midsize jets use it routinely and larger aircraft go to PDK or Hartsfield.

FBO: FBO service with a lounge and ramp cars, a quieter ramp than PDK, and quick access to the interstate.

Ground travel: Downtown about 15 to 20 minutes. Midtown about 20 to 25 minutes. Buckhead about 25 to 35 minutes.

When it wins

The big airport. It wins only for the largest long range jets and for an international arrival that needs it. Everything else is better served at PDK or FTY.

FBO: One FBO on the field with customs. Airline traffic means long taxi times and occasional holds, so allow extra time on both ends and do not use it for a 45 minute hop.

Ground travel: Downtown about 15 to 20 minutes. Midtown about 20 to 25 minutes. Buckhead about 25 to 35 minutes.

The season

When Atlanta is busy, and what it does to price.

Atlanta flies year round, and business travel sets the base. The peak weeks are Masters week in early April, when Augusta fills and PDK becomes the overflow ramp; the SEC football Saturdays in the fall; Thanksgiving week; Christmas week through New Year's Day; the spring break weeks in March and April; and Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day. In those weeks the aircraft based in Atlanta are spoken for early and prices sit in the upper half of the range. Summer weekdays outside the holidays are the easy weeks to book.

What fits the runway and the mission.

PDK's 6,000 foot runway and its weight limit handle turboprops, light, midsize and super midsize jets and many heavy jets; the largest long range jets use Hartsfield. FTY suits light and midsize jets. Nashville to Atlanta is under an hour in a light jet and about an hour in a turboprop, against four hours on the interstate, so for four people the turboprop is often the sensible answer. Naples to Atlanta is a light jet leg of about an hour and a quarter. New York from Atlanta is about two hours and fits a light or midsize jet.

  • Buckhead: PDK. Downtown, Midtown and the stadium: FTY is often faster by car, and calmer on the ramp.
  • PDK is busy on Friday afternoons and when weather slows the Atlanta airspace, PDK feels it too. Allow a few extra minutes on the ground.
  • Masters week: Augusta parking is by reservation and sells out weeks ahead. A day trip from PDK is common, and we book it as soon as you know your dates.
  • Nashville to Atlanta is a short flight and a long drive. A turboprop or light jet turns a four hour drive into about an hour in the air, and your emailed planning estimate shows what that costs.
  • Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms across north Georgia. A morning departure usually beats them.
  • Customs at PDK handles a Bahamas or Caribbean return. Hartsfield is only for the largest aircraft; the taxi alone can run longer than a Nashville flight.
