Pilatus PC-12
The PC-12 is a single engine turboprop with a cabin close to a light jet's and a large cargo door at the back. It uses runways that are short for a jet, so it can land at the small airport near the lake house, the farm or the golf course. Under about two hours it gets you there close to the time a light jet would, at a lower hourly range. You will hear the propeller more than you would on a jet, but you can talk at a normal volume. Clients like the wide seats, the baggage you can reach in flight and the airports it opens up. On a short corridor leg it is the turboprop we recommend first.

We allow 60 to 80% of the listed baggage volume for packing. Assumed external dimensions: checked bag 28 × 20 × 12 in; golf travel bag 50 × 16 × 12 in; weekend bag 22 × 12 × 12 in. Counts are rounded down and show separate loads, not a combined allowance. Unspecified extra storage is excluded.

- The runway and the field. A paved runway of about 3,000 to 3,500 feet is enough for the PC-12 on a normal day. A pilot checks the length, the surface and the services at a small airport before we recommend it over a jet.
- The leg and the weather. Past about two hours a light jet starts to win on time, and a turboprop rides lower, where summer weather lives. A pilot looks at both before saying it is the right aircraft for the day.

Is a single engine turboprop a good choice for charter?
The PC-12 has flown on charter certificates for decades on one turbine engine, and the type has a long record.
